Superficial Chemical Peels
Superficial chemical peels are a quick, safe way to improve skin tone and texture. Most peels utilize an alpha hydroxy acid, such as glycolic acid, which is a natural compound found in fruit and sugar cane.
These peels are performed monthly in a series of 4 or more treatments. In combination with a good home skin regimen and adequate sun protection, superficial chemical peels will improve the appearance of sun spots, melasma (“the mask of pregnancy”), mild acne, and texture. They help exfoliate dead skin and stimulate collagen regeneration.
Although the name implies exfoliation, most patients will not experience any visible peeling or blistering of the skin. If this does occur, the cosmetic effects of the peel are actually enhanced, although this is not the intended goal. The procedure actually consists of the application of the active chemical to the skin for a few minutes. It is neutralized when burning or redness are noted by the patient or the health care provider.
After receiving a chemical peel, redness may be noted for 1 to 24 hours. Most people can apply sunscreen and makeup immediately after the procedure. You will find it more comfortable to avoid strong topical medications and exfoliants for a couple of days before and after the procedure. Avoiding the sun or a week before and after the peel will also help prevent the unusual problem of increased or decreased pigmentation from the peel.
