fillers
Why use a filler?
As we age, we lose the underlying support (bone and fatty tissue) that gives our face its unique shape. (Think of deflating beach ball.) Fillers allow us to re-volumize certain areas. There are several types of fillers. As we evaluate your face, we will help you select the optimum product for your individual needs.
What fillers are used at Yellowstone Dermatology?
As we age, we lose some of our bony facial structure. There are many (ten or so) fat
compartments in the face that also get smaller or tend to drift downward with
time. Loss of facial structure in
the bony and fat compartments causes us to form jowls, deeper set eyes, and
generally look older. This change in
our facial shape can now be attacked non-surgically. Sculptra Aesthetic
is a fairly new facial injectable treatment to help us reverse the appearance of
the soft tissue
and bony changes that occur with time.
This biostimulatory process happens slowly over time. After 2 or 3 treatments, our body
creates its own collagen, giving the appearance of a younger facial structure.
This correction may be evident for 2 to 5 years, however, because the aging
process continues, yearly touchups may be desirable. Sculptra Aesthetic
can help fill areas that we have previously neglected, such as hollow temples or
cheeks. Approved by the FDA in 2004
for HIV/AIDS patients with severe facial wasting and hollowing, it was approved
recently for use in non-HIV patients.
Hyaluronic acids (Juvederm Ultra ®, Juvederm Ultra Plus ®, Restylane ®, and Perlane ®) come in different consistencies and thickness. These moldable products are derived from non-animal sources. As we age, we lose the natural hyaluronic acid (HA) from our skin and joints. The hyaluronic acid fillers replace this product. HA acts as a sponge to attract water and plump up moderate to severe skin lines, such as naso-labial folds. It is also an excellent product to help plump up and reshape lips and those annoying “puppet lines” on our jaw. These results may last from 6 to 12 months. Touch-up treatments are often helpful n maintaining the good response.
Radiesse ® contains calcium hydroxylapatite, a naturally occurring mineral component of bone and cartilage. This product forms a scaffold and then stimulates your own fibroblasts (skin cells) to fill the scaffold with new collagen. Touch-up treatments are recommended at about 2 months. In younger patients, this product may then last 12 to 18 months. It may not be the treatment of choice in older individuals or those with very thin skin.
